Celebrating Merce Cunningham's legacy at Studio Wayne McGregor

Studio Wayne McGregor hosts Merce Cunningham Centennial Residency in London

'Merce Cunningham was a choreographer whose curiosity, sense of adventure and seamless collaboration knew no bounds.'
- Wayne McGregor

On April 16, 2019 - the late, legendary American choreographer Merce Cunningham’s 100th birthday - the largest Cunningham Event ever staged will take place in London, New York City, and Los Angeles called Night of 100 Solos: A Centennial Event.

We are delighted to be supporting the Merce Cunningham Trust through our FreeSpace programme by providing space and facilities for rehearsals for the London performance. In exchange, the Trust will host the Merce Cunningham Centennial London Residency at Studio Wayne McGregor in February and March 2019.

The residency features a comprehensive series of inspiring workshops, open rehearsals and company classes, which will allow our local east London community, and the greater London community, rare and exciting opportunities to engage with the work of this great choreographer.

All free and ticketed events for the Merce Cunningham Centennial London Residency are on sale now. Click here to book.

Visit the Barbican website to view the list of dancers who will be rehearsing at Studio Wayne McGregor for the London performance on 16 April 2019.

Did you know that the Merce Cunningham Centennial London Residency has been made possible through our FreeSpace programme?

FreeSpace has grown in to an inspiring community of artists who work in our studios for free and then in exchange give back to the local community and schools. FreeSpace is at the heart of our vision for Studio Wayne McGregor: allowing artists the space and creative freedom they need to make, explore, and experiment, and then sharing that creativity with the world.

Since we opened our studios in April 2017, over 100 artists have taken part, using 4,500 hours, and engaging with 2,000 people in return.

Each £25 donated will allow us to give one hour of FreeSpace, and more opportunities to give back to the community with creative and educational events like this inspiring Residency.
